Aldata helps US Retailers to increase Food Safety
Aldata Solution, a global leader in supplier to consumer business process optimization, announced today the availability of its research paper on food safety, “Attention Shoppers: Pathogen-Free Fruit on Aisle Five.” The white paper – available online – highlights the importance of food safety and traceability. Aldata also provides an overview of pending legislation on food safety and the implications for retailers. Aldata outlines what technology retailers need in place to enhance overall food and product safety and the benefits of traceability such as increasing efficiency and reducing liability.
This summer’s egg recall underscored the importance of food safety. Sale of tainted eggs and the subsequent recall resulted in 1,500 cases of salmonella and the waste of at least half a billion eggs. Food-borne illnesses cost the United States millions a year including medical services, lost work and disability. In addition to the economic impact, retailers may soon have to adhere to stricter regulations regarding the processing and tracking of food. The U.S. government is working on legislation that would grant agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration more oversight including the ability to mandate recalls.
“Recent incidents such as the egg and peanut butter recalls have given the retail industry a black eye. The longer it takes to pull tainted products from the supply chain, the greater the loss of consumer confidence, which could have a devastating impact,” said Brendan Lowe, vice president, Aldata Solution. “It’s critical that organizations adopt traceability standards and processes. By alerting shoppers of recalls and tracking products throughout their entire lifecycle, organizations can increase efficiency and restore shoppers’ confidence.”
Aldata has been working closely with retailers for years to enhance traceability throughout the supply chain. Its solutions enable retailers to track goods throughout their entire lifecycle in real time. Using a variety of technologies including barcodes and RFID, retailers can also create a comprehensive product history capturing an item’s total transformation, which helps trace goods back to their point of origin. For instance, a retailer could track the history of the orange juice it sold all the way back to the receipt of the oranges. With Aldata, organizations can quickly and effectively manage product recalls. Organizations are also alerted when there is an issue, enabling retailers to act swiftly to remove products from the supply chain and alert consumers of a recall.
